Lesson Planning and First Visit to Site

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

Notes I made on my phone:

Lesson Planning – THINK times too

Have a good understanding of what motivates children

GET A BIG PIECE OF PAPER TO HELP PLAN LESSONS!!!!

First will be intro lesson – fun and easy.

Have a Stretch. Move your Arms. Shake your Body to wake it up.

Tell me the First Word that comes to mind when you think of photography and write them down on blackboard (gets them talking without pressure) - explain how it’s more than that - it can be creative, artistic, image making - moving image etc.

on pieces of paper write down at least one other creative activity you like doing - music, drawing, pottery.

At least go round and tell me your name - perhaps some silly additive like what you had for breakfast or something that happened yesterday that made you laugh (be sensitive to the group) or something you saw/ watched on tv yesterday that you remember. Your favourite class at school even as that’s easier to answer.

Easy starter lesson.

Understand task for the overall reason we’re there - their nurture space.

Why they go there? Is it useful? What would make it better? What do they not like about it and how can we through art and photography improve that space so you want to stay there when you need a break.

Understand the camera and what it does. - diagrams on white board may be useful - Game of naming Parts on a hand out perhaps (different learning types) also show with physical camera.

Composition practise - can use each other for Models (directing a model and choosing location for image - tie in tricks for using iPad as camera - composition and different focus points and adjusting for brightness.

Portraiture, nature/landscapes, creative if access to PS. - and on iPads for instagram posts. Whitegram - makes a Photo Look More Professional. - helps with size issues on insta too.

Lighting if we can be bothered. - natural lighting - windows, time of day, cloudy better than sunny. Can use bag if raining to protect camera.

Idea Generation techniques - mind Mapping, Research - Visual (others work) and Text based of Genre you want to learn about or a wat an artist creates an image or piece of work. Tine away to think and be creative. Ask others what they think/ bounce ideas of them, hearing yourself say an idea out loud can help you figure out what works and what doesn’t. Reflection - contact sheets. Being aware there’s a difference from ab Image online to a printed one - just awareness because maybe no printing facilities - PERHAPS something to offer them on their VISIT - can print a favourite image or two on one sheet of paper to see physical result.

Tour of all Studios at uni - Chance to test lights if time? Darkroom Tour.

What does nurture mean to them - the word - mental health stuff and techniques. (If appropriate).

Does the work they want to produce just need to be a pretty image or does it have a deeper meaning, theme etc.

Could do techniques for seeing better - find textures inside and outside, Technology around us, something beautiful to you/ an object if Beauty (interesting to see their results (May differ from person to person) (gets them looking).

Explore the nurture space to visualise what we could put in there – what they’d like to be different.

Go outdoors – nature photography (weather factor)

With energy levels (reflect upon after first day) but because first lesson of their day see which works better for them to start with “theory” or activities first.

Sit in circle because this is something different and fun.

WE MUST HAVE LEARNING OUTCOMES and PLANS for the 8-10 weeks of the placement by MONDAY!!

In terms of getting 120 hours of placement time, we'll have 2 hours per day teaching and the rest is planning, the visit to university with the class, exhibition at the school of their work after - check if this is enough?

Phone call on 26/01/23 with Grandma who is an ex-teacher:

Meeting at Starbucks for lesson plan:

We met at Starbucks to create a lesson plan together and talk through ideas. This was super useful and we planned how to get to the school.

Planning notes:

First Visit to Site:

We'll meet Jen at 9:30 on Monday 30th January. Chance to see where we'll be, test journey length and see where to go when we arrive the following day.

Hopefully we can meet with Pauline who is head of Support For Learning so that she can get an overview of our project.

We managed to successfully time getting the same bus and mine managed to link up with Emily's bus which then took us an hour to get there. We then walked the 20 mins and found the entrance. We arrived at 9:30, signed in and met with Jenny. We got shown around the school - seeing the room we'll be in, the Nurture space (and met the staff there), the other art rooms, past Napier students projects with the school hanging in a corridor. We got a better sense from Jenny, standing in the Nurture room, of what they want the outcome to be - images the pupils create, in and outside the room which link to the term nurture. We will thus work to understand what this means for everyone. Support, calmness, space, resilience and confidence to return to the lesson after having the breathing space in the nurture room. This is something we'll work on each week with the pupils. We met a few of the pupils joining our lesson as we went around the school. We sat and asked our questions for Jenny and got her to check our lesson plan - she gave us useful feedback and liked our ideas! We signed out at around 10:20. Walked and got the bus back (a two hour journey in total with walking, waiting time and two buses).

The night before our first lesson, Jen emailed us to confirm that 12 pupils are interested in attending our lesson.
